Reading Sight Words
We will learn to read using a variety of strategies. ¬†To start, it is especially helpful if students recognize certain words on sight! ¬†We will be memorizing sight words each week that appear frequently in our week’s readings. ¬†Knowing these words builds the first graders’ reading confidence and provides a springboard for learning more about words and letter sounds. ¬†Our JOURNEYS reading series calls these sight words, “Words to Know.” ¬†A list of 6-8 Words to Know will come home every week. ¬†It is important that your child practices reading these words until they become automatic. ¬†Your help in this area can make a huge difference in how confident your child feels when we face these words in text at school. ¬† Thanks!¬†
